We hope students and teachers enjoyed a good fall semester. When teachers and principals return to school in January and gotten refreshed on their English and Math, it’s time for them to incorporate a Health topic that cuts across other subjects and grades: It is important for schools to educate students and the community on how to be vigilant for the signs of bed bugs, which in turns prevents larger problems and expenses for your school system and classrooms, and lessens the chance of bed bug incidents in schools (and for students and employees in their homes).  Bed bugs are hitchhikers that can easily come to school via jackets and backpacks.  This isn’t a rich vs poor school distric issue- the wealthy community of Greenwich, Connecticut recently reported bed bugs in one of its schools.

Bell Environmental created a valuable and free tool for teachers to use to educate their students on how to identify the signs of and take preventive measures.  Our new book “Roscoe and the Big Bed Bug Hunt” teaches students how to find bed bugs of all stages and where they hide. With the bed bug epidemic spreading so quickly into homes and schools, everyone should have the knowledge to prevent and detect issues from the start.

The book features games, coloring pages and helpful information about bed bugs for elementary school-aged children and parents. The book follows beagle detective Roscoe the Bed Bug Dog on a search. Children connect-the-dots, find hidden items, draw pictures, and complete word searches and mazes as they learn about these insects in a fun and friendly way. The book is available as a free download on Bell Environmental’s website

In addition, Bell Environmental Services performs education services and assemblies for audiences on bed bug biology and habits in addition to how to prevent new encounters, detect bed bugs’ presence, and resolve bed bug issues.  These sessions can be valuable and tailored for key audiences such as administrators, superintendents, principals, teachers, school nurses, students, and maintenance and operational personnel in your school system.  Each interactive session includes extensive question and answer periods addressing participants concerns about encounters in the home, the workplace, and urban settings.
